This spring we have launched Jaw Jaw, a new arts, health and wellbeing initiative that aims to extend the reach of our events into the homes of the isolated or lonely in our rural communities. Working with wellbeing, health and social care partners, Robin Mudge, Kim Price and Wellmoor, we aim to extend the joy that Villages in Action brings into homes using technology and online tools.

This project combines our track record of programming performing arts activity in rural communities with the expertise of local social prescribing agencies to deliver an innovative real-time online video conferencing network.  Through a series of online workshops and club sessions we are bringing together isolated individuals in our communities by enabling meaningful interactions, conversations and activities. We hope that this will help to develop their ongoing confidence and ability to engage with a wider community and generally improve their levels of wellbeing and mental health through creativity.

The workshops are being carefully crafted by selected professional Devon-based artists, designed to build collaborative community relationships, which in the first instance will include group movement and musical activities, delivered by Jane Mason and Wren Music.

In the second component, our partner social prescribing agencies and wellbeing specialists will provide weekly social café style ‘drop-ins’ online, providing an opportunity to engage the beneficiaries and check on their general state of wellbeing.

Our ambitions are that as restrictions are lifted, we can bring participants face-to-face at our community sites, but we are monitoring the ongoing situation.

The Jaw Jaw project has been made possible thanks to the Devon County Council- Doing What Matters Grants Fund
